    Electronic Suggestion Box   [Top]
Have a suggestion for improving the library? We'd like to hear from you by email. Thanks.

    Borrowing Information   [Top]
All students, faculty and staff of the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest, their alumni/alumnae, and local church workers, lay or ordained, have borrowing privileges at the Booher Library. Books are loaned from the Booher Library for a period of one month. We will renew books twice for a total of three months. To renew your loans, it is necessary for you to call or come in. Renewals by e-mail are not now possible.

The Booher Library maintains reciprocal borrowing agreements with the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the University of Texas at Austin. To learn how to obtain borrowing privileges to one or both of these institutions, speak with the Head of Public Services at the Booher Library between 8 and 5, Monday through Friday.

    Carrels and Lockers   [Top]
Lockers are available in the library. There are also study carrels which may be used on a first-come, first-served basis. A few study carrels downstairs may be assigned for the year on the basis of need. After the third week of class, if you feel you need an assigned carrel for the year, please speak with the Head of Public Services.

    Circulation Rules   [Top]
The following items are checked out by handing them to an attendant at the Circulation Desk.

    • Books and some barcoded periodicals from the open stacks: The loan period is approximately one month. The due date is stamped inside the front cover of the items circulated. We will renew these twice for a total of 3 months but we do ask that you call and ask for the renewal. If we do not hear from you, we will send you a notice. No fines will be charged as long as you are currently enrolled. Items may be recalled by the library.
    • Audio/Visual materials - cassette tapes, CD's, albums, video tapes, etc.: the loan period is one week. A staff person will process the item and let you know the due date. We will renew these materials only once with some exceptions.
    • Periodicals: Generally periodicals - journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. do not circulate. Please try to photocopy any articles you want. In rare cases we will circulate an issue when most of the issue is needed. Please check with a staff person.

    Computers for Patron Use   [Top]
The Booher Library presently provides one electric typewriter and six computers for patron use. Each computer allows access to the Internet and each contains Microsoft Word. Two units also include Word Perfect. All machines permit access to the TexShare system of databases, indexes and full-texts. Some machines contain Libronix/Logos and BibleWorks, computer programs for research in the Bible and in various related reference works. All machines offer access to the ATLA index to religious periodicals.

While computer use is limited to two hours when someone is waiting, there is no limit on use when no one is waiting.

ETSS and LSPS students have first priority on the public machines.

    Fines   [Top]
We prefer not to charge fines. We prefer that you return the item on time in consideration for others who might need the item. If you do have items that are overdue then fines accrue at the rate of 10 cents a day for non-students as well as graduates.

    Lost Book Policy   [Top]
If an item is declared lost, the replacement cost of the item will be as follows:

    • If the item is available for purchase, the replacement cost will be the cost of:
      1. the item in the current market, plus
      2. postage and
      3. a processing fee of $5.00
    • If the item is no longer in print or is unavailable, the cost will be:
      1. the average cost of the item as determined by the library plus
      2. a processing fee of $25.00.
    Interlibrary Loans   [Top]
If the Booher Library does not have an item you wish to use, there is a strong possibility that the staff will be able to locate the item you desire at another library and borrow it from that library for you. It does take time. How long it takes depends on a variety of factors. This service is usually free unless the other library charges. In that event the charges are passed on to the borrower.

For assistance or for further information, contact the Head of Public Services who is usually available between 8 and 5.

    LSPS/Seminex Library  [Top]

The Library of the Lutheran Seminary of the Southwest is integrated in the Booher Library shelves and catalog. This collection, still owned and provided by Wartburg Theological Seminary, developed originally in Christ Seminary Seminex (St. Louis). The LSPS/Seminex Library serves all the patrons of the Booher Library but is especially dedicated to supporting the academic curriculum of LSPS.

    Nearby Libraries   [Top]
Search the catalogs or the web sites of these Austin collections by choosing one of the links below. We are privileged to host the national Archives of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in our own library building. We have a reciprocal borrowing agreement with the Presbyterian Seminary and the University of Texas, and we can issue TexShare cards to those who wish to use the public library collections. For detailed information check with the ETSS Head of Public Services or at the ETSS Circulation Desk.

  • Photocopying   [Top]
Presently there are three photocopiers in the Booher Library for patron use. These machines are primarily intended for the students, staff and faculty of the Seminary of the Southwest and are card operated. Cost is ten cents per printed page; many students make double sided copies to save paper. However, the cost is based on sides printed, not the number of sheets used.

Copy Cards are available for purchase in the library in $5, $10 or $20 denominations. Additional credit can be added to any card when it runs low or out.

Copyright guidelines are posted. Please read and follow them.

Photocopy machines permit duplexing, stapling, enlarging and reduction in sizes, etc.

    Reserves   [Top]
Reserve items are shelved in the circulation lobby. You can find a reserve item by consulting the syllabus for your course, a copy of which is kept in the red notebook beside the reserve shelves. We shelve reserve books mainly by titles, but the on-line syllabus will indicate the shelving location. The loan period for Reserve items is three hours. Please bring the book to the circulation desk to have it checked out to you through the computer circulation system.

Exceptions to the three-hour limit must be cleared with an on-duty librarian, not a student, and books borrowed at the end of the day should be returned in the first hour of the following day.

Some items, for example many of those for MAPM courses, have an extended loan period to better accommodate the irregular schedules of the MAPM curriculum. These items can be taken out for up to three days or a bit longer if arrangements are made in advance. They must also be returned by 9 A.M. on the due date.
