Restaurants near 6th and Congress

A bigger list of good eating places on 6th Street.
1886 Bakery and Café - The 6th Street entrance to the Driskill Hotel, just off the corner of 6th and Congress which is for Austin the center of the universe. Upscale, fine ambience with good food. Resist the temptation to sit by the wondrous windows at the massive mahogany booth tables and watch the walkers passing – the windows attract flies. Don’t fail to order the lemon chiffon cake. The Iron Cactus - 606 Trinity Street, Austin, TX. 78701 - Southwestern cuisine in a typically crowded, noisy atmosphere. Upstairs you can eat in an outdoor veranda overlooking 6th Street.
Katz’s Deli and Bar -613 West 6th. “Katz’s Never Kloses.” An all-around great deli which asserts a Big Apple connection (you walk in through a hallway like a subway car, containing maps of NYC). The cheese blintzes are to die for, and not what you expect.
Louie's 106 - 106 East 6th Street, just off Congress. Seriously upscale (but Austin eschews dress codes, and Louie’s doesn’t have one). Try one of their “Flights” of wine (2 ounces each of three separate wines with a list of which is what). Take plastic, you won’t have enough cash.
Old Pecan Street Café - 6th St. An upscale restaurant on 6th Street (formerly named Pecan Street). Excellent food, expensive by Austin standards but not by those of Chicago or New York.
Stubb’s Barbecue -8th and Red River. A Gospel brunch (with live music) every Sunday beginning at 11:00 am. If you think you can get to an early service on Sunday, make a reservation for this early in the week (or you won’t get in).
