Restaurants near the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest

Avenue B Grocery - 4403 Avenue B. First-name treatment in the deli corner of a neighborhood grocer. Sit in the porch swing outside, in the shade of pecan trees, to eat your custom-made sandwich. Captain Quackenbush's Bakery - 411 E 43rd St. Baked goods, good coffee, and a very limited pre-made sandwich menu. Popular with students from the Hyde Park neighborhood. Hyde Park Grill - 4206 Duval St. Upscale restaurant with the best breaded French fries in town.
Julio’s Restaurant - 4230 Duval Street. Near the seminary, excellent TexMex. If you order their excellent chicken/vegetable soup, don’t order anything else till next time. Kerbey Lane Café - The one nearest the seminary is at 2606 Guadalupe, but there are three other locations, each with its own ambience determined by the neighborhood. A 24/7 restaurant, with a specialty in breakfast (try their gingerbread pancakes) but a well-rounded menu. Mother’s Café and Garden - 4215 Duval. Near the seminary, a fine vegetarian restaurant.

Red River Café - 2912 Medical Arts St. A two-block walk through Eastwoods Park from the Seminary brings you to this small, historical Austin grill. Decent food, really cheap, while you rub shoulders with art students, law students, and people who have been around long enough to know the best.

Ruby's Barbecue - 512 West 29th, just off Guadalupe. One of the staples in any Texas diet, this barbecue is served with a heavy dose of blues music.

Sampaio - 2809 San Jacinto Blvd., two blocks from the Chapel. Fine Brazilian cuisine a five-minute walk away.
Trudy's Texas Star Restaurant and Bar - 409 West 30th Street (and other locations in Austin). TexMex food, University people, loud and fun. Try the avocado stuffed with cheese and chicken, breaded and fried.
