Music and Movies

Alamo Draft House Cinema - Food, drink, superior movies and live performances, all in one place. It's so good it's franchising, but we hope the fun stays the same. Four places in Austin. The Broken Spoke - 3201 South Lamar. A honkytonk with a country music tradition which goes back to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
Threadgill's - Honkytonk cafe with Southern home cooking. This is the place where Janis Joplin got her start.

Unique Cultural Enclaves

The Bats - One and a half million Mexican free-tail bats live under the bridge on Congress Avenue. Parking beside the bridge is provided by the Austin American Statesman, and people gather at twilight every evening to watch them swarming out for an early evening breakfast. The Drag - That part of Guadalupe Street which borders the western edge of the main campus, the Drag is where students go to avoid anything academic.
East Austin - This page provides films about people in East Austin. Prepared as a film project in the University of Texas, these films offer astonishingly professional views of one of Austin's great neighborhoods. South Congress - A special array of music venues, restaurants, antique stores, motels and bars makes this part of Austin worth visiting.
